ABOUT US

MELFORT MULTI-K HISTORY

The Melfort Multi-K began as a dream of one individual, “My primary vision was setting people in motion.  Getting them out and about, breathing in fresh air, wholesome air and getting fit at the same time,"  Dr. Richard van der Ross, founder.  Adopting the slogan “Promoting Fitness and Health in Melfort,: Dr. van der Ross put together a team to plan the first even in September 2011.

Each year the Melfort Multi-K consists of the 1K Fun Run, a 5K Run/Walk, a 10K Run/Walk, and a 21.1K Run and is a resounding success with 600 participants of all ages and abilities, and from all areas of the province and beyond.  In the months and weeks prior to the event there is a noticeable increase in walkers and runners training throughout the city.  Not only does this event increase the fitness levels of the community, but the personal achievements are obvious as the racers cross the finish line.

The Melfort Multi-K committee receives generous support from the business community in Melfort and District through sponsorship.  The whole community gets involved with over 100 volunteers involved in hosting the event.

We continue to honour those who have crossed the finish line 5 and 10 times with the 5X and 10X Club.

HONOURING JEFF GENDALL

In March 2025, we lost someone truly special—Jeff Gendall. His passing left a deep void in his family, in our community, and in our committee. On race day, we come together not in sorrow, but in celebration—of Jeff’s life, his energy, and the joy he brought to all of us.

Jeff joined our committee back in 2018, and from the very beginning, he was a spark. His positive, fun-loving nature became a cornerstone of this event’s success. Whether it was through his hilarious social media posts or his enthusiastic cheers out on the course, Jeff had a way of making everyone feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated. He didn’t just participate—he uplifted.

When we asked ourselves how we could honour someone who gave so much, the answer came naturally. We renamed the 5KM run to the Jeff Gendall Memorial 5KM—a lasting tribute to a man who embodied everything this event stands for: community, encouragement, and joy.

But we didn’t stop there. After heartfelt conversations with Jeff’s family, we decided to include his image on every race bib this year. That way, Jeff is still here—cheering you on, just like he always did. And if you take a close look at your medal today, you’ll see Jeff leading the pack, reminding us all to stay active, to live fully, and to love life.

Jeff’s family asked that today be a celebration. So let’s run, walk, cheer, and laugh in his honour. Let’s carry forward the spirit he brought to every moment. And let’s remember that while Jeff may no longer be with us physically, his energy, his kindness, and his love for life will always be part of this event—and part of us.

Thank you, Jeff. We miss you. We celebrate you. We run with you.
